History Camp

The Warren County Historical Society’s
History Camp for Kids 2011

This summer, students entering 4th to 7th grade this fall are once again invited to explore an important topic from our county’s vivid past in the Warren County Historical Society’s “History Camp for Kids” on

Tuesdays and Wednesdays, July 12, 13, 19 & 20.

This year’s topic is

“Museums Without Walls: The Cemeteries of Southwest Ohio”

Campers will visit two of the nation’s most beautiful cemeteries, Spring Grove Cemetery in
Cincinnati and Woodland Cemetery in Dayton. A cemetery is, of course, where families and
communities bury their dead. They are, however, very frequently beautiful places adorned with
majestic trees and lush gardens, and contain such picturesque park-like settings as to be also
called arboretums. Our visits will not dwell on death but rather the extraordinary lives of those
who are buried there, for cemeteries also give us the opportunity to visit the final resting places of
those who made lasting contributions to our lives, and helped build our towns, our state and our
nation.

The Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum in Cincinnati was chartered in 1845, and is the second
largest cemetery in the United States. Buried in its 733 acres are such manufacturing giants as Procter and
Gamble, along with Civil War generals, U.S. Supreme Court justices and the individuals that made Cincinnati
the great city that it is.

Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum was founded in 1841, and sits on the highest spot in Dayton. It is
one of the nation’s five oldest rural/garden cemeteries. Here rest the remains of the Wright Brothers, poet
Paul Laurence Dunbar, humorist Erma Bombeck and many other important people who lived in the Miami
Valley.

Campers will also visit the Lebanon Cemetery, founded in 1850, and Lebanon’s Pioneer Cemetery,
which actually contains the old Baptist and Methodist graveyards. In these two cemeteries we will find an
Ohio governor, relatives of President Abraham Lincoln and scores of Warren County pioneers.

Join us as we take a fascinating journey through these “Museums Without Walls: The Cemeteries of
Southwest Ohio.”
