What's New?

Warren County Teacher's Monument

There's always something new to see at WCHS properties! We've been working hard to present our ever growing collection in new and exciting ways!
Beyond the new front brick steps of Harmon Museum, and through the renovated front hall, our Archeological & Indigenous Peoples Exhibit received a face-lift and our pre-historic artifacts have been given new life with updated displays. On the same level, the newly dedicated Bruce E. Young Farm Heritage Gallery has been redone and reorganized to better showcase the collection and the groovy new Mid-Century Modern Exhibit captures Warren County life in the 1950s and 60s. All the shops in the Village Green have been given new life with two new shops added: "The Music Shop" and "Grandma's Sweet Shop".

The wings of Glendower Historic Mansion's upper floors have been opened displaying the Maid's Quarters and Work Room to better convey the life of the less influential that also lived in the home. Glendower's other rooms have been updated to better represent the ten decades in which it was lived in (1840-1940).

The newly renamed Armstrong Conference Center (the Old Post Office) has a wonderful front lettering along with the brand-new Armstrong Gallery of Flight. This gallery is dedicated to the men and women, of Warren County, that made great strides in the frontier of the skies and above.

Acquisitioned Art - Marcus Mote
Picture
Mt. Washington (1845)
An antiques dealer from New England retired to Arizona. While there, he was asked to appraise an estate. He recognized the location and purchased the work. When he downsized, the work was listed for sale. Several patrons pitched in to purchase the piece and the dealer worked with us to get this beautiful landscape home.

The Twins (1849)
March 14th marked acquisition of a portrait featured on Antiques Roadshow. Twins, John Milton Charters and William Morris Charters (1846 - 1848), were the sons of Dr. William Morris Charters and Cynthia Dutton Seely (1806 - 1883 and 1809 - 1860 respectively).  The boys died a week apart. In 1849. When Quaker artist, Marcus Mote was hired to paint a portrait of Dr. William Morris Charters, Mote posthumously painted the twins as well (we also have Dr. Charters' portrait). Dr. Charters was so distraught over the loss of his children that he, soon after, packed up his family and practice and moved west.

The Betsy H. Maple Trust, represented by Karri Hamilton daughter of Betsy Maple, (second wife of William Chester “Chet” Maple), personally delivered the painting the family gifted to the Harmon Museum.
